The 44th NID Convocation banners celebrated the graduating batch through a visual language inspired by this year’s theme, “Design in India, Design for the World.” As part of a five-member team, I helped design bilingual banner systems, developed motifs and patterns, tested materials, and planned their spatial placement.

We began with several layout explorations to define hierarchy and flow. As the design direction evolved, we adapted our concepts to the rule of using only white fabric backgrounds, refining colour and pattern to maintain clarity and harmony.

We created 3D-rendered prototypes for organdy banners and conducted small-scale screen-printing tests on fabric samples to evaluate material behaviour and colour interplay.

We coordinated with vendors for screen prints and digital prints, managing colour accuracy, costing, and placement strategy. The final installation consisted of over 80 banners displayed across key campus spaces, including Eames Plaza.

Event and Outcome

The ceremony was attended by the Chief Guest Droupadi Murmu (President of India) along with senior dignitaries: Acharya Devvrat (Governor of Gujarat), Bhupendrabhai Patel (Chief Minister of Gujarat) and Piyush Goyal (Union Minister of Commerce & Industry). A total of 430 students received their degrees at the convocation ceremony.

Lessons Learned

Designing for a large-scale institutional event taught me to strike a balance between creative intent and production realities. Working within material and bilingual constraints pushed me to adapt quickly and communicate ideas clearly to those approving the work.

Coordinating with vendors provided me with practical insight into how design translates to production, from colour checks and fabric behaviour to screen sizes and print costs.

The project emphasized the value of preparing early, testing physically, and leaving room for pivots. It reminded me that execution is as much a part of design as ideation, and that every decision from material to layout shapes the outcome.
